Finding the perfect school for you can be a har...

Finding the perfect school for you can be a hard decision. That’s why knowing the following tips can help you decide:

-Performance Opportunities-

If you are a performance major, singer, or want to study a particular instrument, it is critical to take the time and research what types of performance opportunities are offered. Be thorough when doing your research, you want to choose a music school that is going to provide the right opportunities for you to grow as a musician, engineer, or music producer.

-On-Site vs. Online-

Are you someone who is a bit more hands-on and would like to work with instructors and students in person? Or are you in need of a flexible schedule and want to complete your schooling from home?

Major components to consider when deciding between on-site music education or online are the following:

-Overall Cost
-Program Availability
-Your level of organization/desire for flexibility
-Recorded Video Opportunities
-Events and Activities

There are no right or wrong answers here, but if you would like to attend an online music program, it is important to narrow your search to music schools that provide that.

If you would rather attend a music school on-site, discover what their facility offers. From practice space to recording studios, the facility is your musical home for the remainder of your music education.

When looking for a music school, the one that you pick will have a lasting impression on your music industry career, it is a decision that should be taken very seriously. Here are some tips to help you decide:

-Exceptional Faculty-

Getting into a school with accomplished and experienced faculty will be critical for your future career. These instructors will play a pivotal part in your music education and your networking opportunities once you graduate. Most music colleges list their faculty on their website.

Take some time to check out their bios, what they have accomplished. Don't get caught up in name value. Just because you haven't heard of an instructor does not mean that their experience doesn't hold any weight.

-Successful Alumni-

You can argue that a music college's success is directly tied to the achievements of its alumni and students. A music school can boast a fantastic program (and it very well could be!), but if the students that graduate never make a splash in the industry that is a problem.

That isn't to say that a music school needs to have worldwide superstars exit its doors. Look for their alumni page (if they don't have an alumni page, that's a major red flag). Don't pay as much attention to the names, check out what they have done, what areas they have mastered, and what sort of career paths they have embarked on.

Are you interested in attending a Music School ...

Are you interested in attending a Music School and not sure where to begin? Choosing a Music College can be a very intimidating task. There are so many important factors that need to be considered when you are trying to find the best music school for you. Here are some tips:

-Location of School-

When choosing a location for the music school you wish to attend, it is important to keep in mind not only how the location will affect you during your time in school, but also your future music career. You'll be spending a significant amount of time in the city that the music school is located in. While that may not be a "make it or break it" factor, it should certainly be considered.

-What Programs are Offered?-

If you are interested in music production, you should not choose a music school that only offers instrument-based programs. The same could be said if you want to study piano or keyboard, and the music school you're looking at focuses more heavily on the technical side of music.

Don't try and contort your aspirations and passion into a music program that doesn't quite fit. Find the music program and curriculum that perfectly encapsulates what you want to learn and what you want to do in the music industry.

In our previous posts, we've covered what a song critique is and how to ask for one. Now, the question is, where can you get a song critique? Fortunately, there are a ton of places to get some valuable feedback for your music. Here are a few of them.

-Music Blogs: It can get tiring sending your music out to countless blogs, but you can get some precious feedback in return. And if a blog likes your music, they will likely feature it on their website. Don't just randomly pick blogs and start requesting critiques. Middle-of-the-road criticism from a seasoned music blog author is more valuable than extreme highs or lows from a random, unknown blogger.

-SoundCloud: This is a great space to post your music and share it with others and listen to other indie musicians. However, just posting your song to SoundCloud isn't going to get you any reviews. You have to go the extra mile and spend time interacting with other musicians on the website so you can slowly draw attention to your music.

-Online Forums: Another route you can take to get critiques is to search Google for music critique forums. When you find a music community you like, make an account and get active on the forums. Always try to contribute to the forum before you start asking for feedback for your work. Other users on the forums need to see that you aren’t there to get feedback and leave.

After knowing you can trust a critiquer, you need to know how to ask for a critique.

When you approach someone to critique your work, you need to know what your goals are. Do you want them to review the entire demo, or just certain songs, or just parts of certain songs? Do you want technical feedback, or do you want to know what they think of the vibe and energy of the song?

And when someone critiques your music, always be open to it.

It is important to not get defensive when you receive constructive criticism. Instead, truly consider their feedback. Remember that there will always be outliers when you get your music critiqued.

If you get feedback from 10 sources, keep an eye out for trends.

If one person falls head over heels in love with your music, but the other nine say it needs work, trust the majority. The trends you notice will also show you where your weak areas are and what you need to practice.

By getting objective feedback on their music, songwriters can learn what's working with their song and what could use a little improvement. Don't get us wrong; it's awesome when you get a glowing review from your parents, spouses, and friends. But unless they work in the music industry or have experience in songwriting, it is unlikely that they can provide the feedback you can trust regarding how well your song stacks up against the competition.

So how can you trust a song critique? There are a few ways to know if you can trust a critique of your songwriting. It's sort of a two-lane road. While your song is being critiqued, you should also be critiquing the person that is analyzing your song. Are they experienced in your genre? You don't want someone who would prefer to critique a blues song reviewing your R&B song. Do you know any songwriters that can vouch for the reviewer?

It's also useful to be able to differentiate between subjective opinions and comments that identify weaknesses in your work. If your critiquer says something like, “I just don’t like it” or “this doesn't sound like a hit,” they are giving you their personal opinion. Now, that doesn't mean they are wrong. But, how exactly is that constructive? Specific issues and comments that can be addressed are what you should be looking for.

Whether your singing in a coffee shop or a stad...

Whether your singing in a coffee shop or a stadium, without a decent warm-up, your voice can crack, strain, get raspy or sound slightly off-pitch and you certainly don’t want that! Here’s a warm up you should do before singing:

-Tongue Rolls

Tongue rolls are similar to lip bubbles because they can warm your voice quickly and reduce vocal tension. Your tongue is actually what causes most vocal tension, so it only makes sense to practice rolling your Rs to keep your tongue loose and flexible.

Practice rolling your Rs first to see if you can keep that consistent without breaking or spluttering for the length of one breath. Once you do, add an "aah" sound to it. While you're doing a tongue roll, do a simple vocal exercise like moving up and down three notes.

You might not be able to sing as high with this exercise because tongue rolls keep your larynx down slightly. Unfortunately, there are individuals who struggled to roll their Rs in general, which would make this warm-up significantly difficult or borderline impossible.

Make sure you warm up as long, or as short, as it needs to be to get your voice to its peak performance level.

Additionally, if you're serious about pursuing your passion in singing, you need to check out the Atlanta Institute of Music and Media, where you’ll learn how to perfect your tone, master your voice, and expand your range.

Depending on how much you have to sing, it could take you an hour to get your voice to its peak before a performance. If you don't warm up, the audience won't really get to see what you're made of. Here are warm-ups you should try:

-Octave Jumps

You should work on your intonation and connecting with your breath, and this warm-up does that. Keep your notes short and detached, start from one of the lowest notes in your vocal range, and then quickly switch between that note and the same note an octave above three times. Because you're keeping your notes short, your pitch accuracy may falter, so just concentrate on hitting both notes straight on each time. But don’t fall flat on the top note or sing sharp on the bottom note. Try to avoid that if possible.

-Elevator Slides

These help work through your vocal registers and smooth out any breaks. To do an elevator slide, make a noise similar to a long, slow siren. Start by using an "ah" sound and slowly descend from high to low and back up. Be sure to keep your throat relaxed and don't let your notes catch in your throat as you sing higher. This can easily happen if you don't move the resonance up into your head voice. Speed the exercise up as your voice gets warmer, and switch the "ah" sound to an "ee" and then an "ooh" sound that'll work a slightly different vocal placement each time.

No matter how big or small the venue is, even if you are singing in your studio, you should always warm up to give the best of you and your talent. Some great warm-ups are:

-The Vocal SeeSaw

One thing that should be included in every vocal warm-up is an articulation exercise. You need to really get your mouth moving because you do not want to mumble during your performance. That's where the vocal seesaw can help.

Start at the bottom of your vocal range, and in one breath, sing up and back down over a major scale. Make sure to anchor your bottom note so that you sing the same note in between every other note you sing, so it resembles a seesaw. In the key of C, it looks like this: CD, CE, CF, CG, CB, CC, and then back down.

-Lip Bubble

The lip bubble will get your voice warm and reduce vocal tension all at the same time. You might remember these from your childhood or if you have kids now. Lip bubbles are very similar to blowing a raspberry.

To do a lip bubble, start by putting your fingers into your cheeks near your lips on both sides of your mouth. Relax your lips, jaw, and tongue. Now the fun part. Blow a raspberry without any sound until you can get that going consistently without breaking the flow of air. Once you've got it going consistently, add an "ahh" sound while you do it.
