-Jimmy McGriff: To some people, playing the keyboard or an organ are two different things. Every now and then, though, someone comes along that figures out how to settle those differences and merge the two to create a unique sound. McGriff's timing is impeccable, and he can make the most unusual decisions in the most exciting situations and vice versa. All keyboardists who want to learn Jazz and Funk Organ should listen to him.

-Stevie Wonder: Starting his recording career at the age of 11, Stevie Wonder is a famous American keyboardist and a former child prodigy. Stevie Wonder became one of the most creative musical figures of the 20th century and produced hit songs like "Superstition," "My Cherie Amour," and "You Are the Sunshine of My Life."

-Bernie Worrell: Worrell started playing piano when he was just three years old. He was the founding member of the American funk band Parliament-Funkadelic and was inducted into the Rock and roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Worrell also played a mean organ and synth.

-Ray Charles: Ray Charles isn’t just one of the greatest keyboardists of all time, Charles is also one of the greatest overall musicians of all time. He was blinded in childhood due to glaucoma but that hasn't slowed him down one bit. He dipped a toe into all kinds of genres, from jazz to gospel to R&B to country.

-Ramsey Lewis: He was a fantastic keyboard player and a giant in the jazz community. Maurice White, the leader and spiritual advisor of Earth Wind and Fire, was his original drummer. White constantly gives props to Lewis as the one who taught him how to make meaningful music that moved people.

-Keith Emerson: Keith was never afraid to take risks, which often resulted in a delightful keyboard sound. Emerson could play the heck out of a long and complicated run and simple, elegant melodies alike. He played for several bands, but he really found success playing with Nice and ELP.

-Billy Currie: Currie was a skilled violinist and pretty handy with a synth. Currie joined the band Ultravox in 1974 and helped define the sound of the new wave. Currie used ARPs, Moogs, and OSCar synthesizers to create instantly recognizable lead lines and strings passages that would go on to inspire a generation of synthesists.

-Elton John: With over 300 million records sold, it's no surprise that Elton John is one of the best-selling musicians of all time. From the success of "Tiny Dancer" in the 1970s to his extravagant outfits during the glam rock 80s to composing The Lion King's "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," Elton John has worn many hats in the music industry. Just in the 1990s alone he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1998! He also puts immense work in on behalf of the LGBTQ community.

-Lonnie Liston Smith: The reason people adore Lonnie Liston Smith is because of his simplicity. He never tried to play circles around anyone, but his ability to just vibe was unmatched. Liston Smith performed with Miles Davis, Pharoah Sanders, and formed Lonnie Liston Smith and The Cosmic Echoes.

-Oscar Peterson: Known as the "King of Inside Swing," Peterson made a lasting impression in the genre of jazz. The Canadian pianist and composer won seven Grammy awards along with a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy. There is a festival named after him: the Oscar Peterson International Jazz Festival.

-Richard Wright: Richard Wright is one of the most famous rock keyboardists for his magic keys and backup vocals in the legendary prog band Pink Floyd. Besides playing keyboards and singing backup vocals, he was also a composer and songwriter. Wright was highly experimental and incorporated sound effects into his tracks that helped give Pink Floyd their unique style.

-Frank McComb: Frank McComb was an R&B, soul, and jazz keyboardist. After flirting briefly with Motown and Columbia, McComb looked to take his keyboard skills to indie label Malibu Sessions. Soon after, Frank would begin releasing through his own record label, Boobescoot. He won the SoulTracks Readers Choice Award for Best Album.

Being a music writer can be discouraging someti...

Being a music writer can be discouraging sometimes, but don’t give up! Below we created a few tips to make money writing music that you may have not considered.

Selling Beats

a- Rappers and artists are constantly looking for tracks to sing on or rap on. Hip-Hop may not be your main love regarding writing music, but you can make some money on the side if you're diverse in your production.

b- A great plan would be to start making and selling beats to an artist who isn’t “big” yet and grow with them. Many producers who make $30,000 for a beat typically started with these rappers when they were just starting and they rose to the top together.

c- There are a few websites that you can sell your beats on as well. This can be beneficial because they are commission-free sales and the websites themselves are very user-friendly.

Getting Started

Really, a lot of the suggestions above and in other posts we’ve done are solely based on pushing yourself to just do it. While you may have the content, the next step is to get yourself out there.

All of these tips can be achieved by anyone. As someone who is writing music, you are always using your creativity, so don’t be afraid to get creative in exploring new areas of the industry!

Having a talent for writing music can be a grea...

Having a talent for writing music can be a great way to make a living but not many people know how to profit off of it. Here are some tips that can help you:

YouTube Channel:

a- One way to earn money on YouTube is with Content ID. This allows its users to manage their copyrighted content on YouTube. If you register your music with Content ID, the videos on YouTube will be compared against the audio files. When your music is used in videos with ads running on them, YouTube will pay you a portion of that advertising money.

b- Many artists start their own channel and show how they make their songs, or even just their beats. You can start your channel as well.

c- Many new artists and producers who want to learn to make music start by watching YouTube. While you show the audience how you’ve made your song, you are also promoting your own music.

Session Work:

a- A great way to earn money writing music is to become a session musician. Many times, studios hire artists/musicians for musical projects or advertising.

b- When solo artists go into the studio, they often will need other musicians to play the different instruments required for the song.

c- This is also a great way to network in the industry. Session work can lead to you getting an offer to become a member of an artist’s touring band or backing vocalist, etc.

If you have talent for writing music, these are great ways to start.

If you are a talented music writer, you can mak...

If you are a talented music writer, you can make a living from it! If you don’t know how, here are some things you can do to accomplish that:

-License Your Tracks: Licensing your music can be a great way to start making some money from your music. Another term for licensing music is synchronization. You can license your music for visual media such as promotional campaigns, films, TV commercials, and more.

If you have the creative ability to come up with new content frequently, you may be able to make upwards of $35,000 a year on synchronization, but how does it work? Some ways to successfully license your music would be to create custom pieces for a company’s request, or by signing up for a website that has monthly subscribers who can download your music from the website.

Sample Packs: Nowadays, the industry is booming, and producers worldwide are using sample packs to get inspired for their next track. Sample Packs can be solely filled with drums, or any audio you want really. They range from piano loops to drums, to Foley, all the way to the audio of birds in a park. You never know what people will need for their next production.

You can either try to send in your packs to a label or a website that sells sample packs, or you can sell them on your own website.

Whether you're in high school or older, one thing you shouldn't ever let anyone tell you is that being a musician or going to a music institute is a sure path to poverty and lack of work. That is a type of negativity that can derail even the most talented musicians and producers.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the medium pay for musicians in 2019 was $30.39 an hour. Assuming you work full-time, that is about 63K a year before taxes. Not a bad income for following your dreams, right?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics also claims that competition is fairly high for music industry careers. A fantastic way to separate yourself from thousands of musicians and producers is by earning a reputable music degree. This will also increase your chances for higher pay when you land yourself a career in music. But now you may be thinking, what do artists do with music degrees? Here’s a shortlist with some of the countless career paths you can dive into:

Artistic Director
Music Production
Choral Director
Media Development
Musician or Game Development
Music Licensing
General Performer/Music Performance
Sound Engineer
Sound Design
More!

When you decide to dive into the music industry...

When you decide to dive into the music industry and be successful, leaving your career in the hands of luck is not always the best decision, you have to work for it and be prepared for anything. That’s why having tools and musical knowledge is so important. And if you apply to a music school, what you put into your experience earning a music degree will likely determine what comes out of it.

If you are determined, passionate, and allow yourself to network and learn from the individuals surrounding you, you're setting yourself up for success. Of course, meeting the right connection or having that lucky break can help, but the overall statistics aren't bad at all.
According to Music School Central, over 50% of music students find work relevant to their degree within four months of their graduation and 75% of music education students found work within four months of graduation.

Comparatively, about 25% of students who graduate college in other majors end up working in a field similar to or related to their major.

Keep those numbers in your back pocket the next time someone challenges your desire to earn a music degree!

Earn a music degree and start your music career with the right foot.

Being a new musician requires a lot of hard wor...

Being a new musician requires a lot of hard work, dedication, consistency and, overall, good music. First impressions keep your audience listening to any of the songs they found you with and will encourage them to listen to the rest of your songs. However, there are other little things you can do to hook a listener with a song, such as:

-Early Hook: Incorporating a quick melody from your hook in the intro can be beneficial. Generally, the hook is the section of the song that people will indefinitely remember or be singing throughout their day. Introducing that section early in the song retrieves the attention of the listener very quickly. Now, this doesn’t mean you copy and paste the full section of the song into the intro, just incorporate the melody on its own with no other elements before the first verse. Get creative with it!

-Early Chorus: Similar to the hook, choruses can often be one of the most memorable parts of a song, so why not place it at the beginning to quickly snag the listener's attention? Look at a song like Bon Jovi's You Give Love a Bad Name. The song begins with a vocal chorus tease before driving into an awesome guitar solo. That's how you hook a listener.

Hooking a listener nowadays has been a more dif...

Hooking a listener nowadays has been a more difficult task. Every musical combination is pretty much done these days. Being able to give a fresh and different sound is what makes you stand out, and keeping it simple might actually be a great starting point.

Many musicians make their tracks immediately start off with all the instruments involved in the song to catch the listeners’ attention. This isn’t wrong by any means, but have you thought about keeping the intro extremely simple? Or building the intro by adding each instrument in one at a time?

Having space and dynamics in a song can be intriguing to many listeners. This open space in the song can be used in order to hear each small detail with clarity. By doing this you will draw the listener in even closer and let them connect to each instrument being played.

This concept can also pertain to the whole track. It’s easy to get carried away and add unnecessary elements when writing music. Sometimes it’s best to keep it simple.

Talent is important but knowing how to display it is even more important than the actual talent, don’t you think? You can apply to a music school to get the best knowledge, guidance, and tools to become a well-rounded professional musician.

There are countless musicians around the world,...

There are countless musicians around the world, and getting your music heard can be really difficult. That’s why you want your songs to be great from the very beginning. First impressions are key to success. Here are some tips to achieve this:

-It’s important to start your song with something unexpected or slightly out of the ordinary. This can include items such as Foley recordings (which are recordings of the reproduction of everyday sounds), soundscapes, or even mic feedback.

-Having these items included in the intro of a song can grasp the listener’s ears immediately and bring them to a different headspace. Some examples of these audio snippets would be birds, water, or synth drones. It all depends on what tone you are going for in your song.
-People are used to hearing the start of music immediately, but when you insert something different like birds tweeting, the listener is already intrigued and you’ve set the stage for the rest of the song. This being said, it can be a make-or-break moment. There is a fine line between gimmick and creative touch, so choose wisely.

Give listeners a great first impression always!

Cleaning your guitar is not as simple as wiping the dirt and dust and done. We wish it were. Before the cleaning process, here's what you will need to do it properly: paint-cleaning clay, microfiber cloths, guitar polish, polish pad, guitar wax, guitar detailer.

-Paint-cleaning Clay: Get detailing spray to act as a lubricant as you slide the paint-cleaning clay back and forth. By doing this, you are removing dirt, gunk, grime, and other contaminants. When you're done, wipe down your guitar with a dry cloth, or preferably, a microfiber cloth to avoid scratching your paint.

-Polish: By polishing, you remove light scratches that are embedded in the clear coat. When you're done, and you have a light haze from the polish in your paint, buff your guitar with your microfiber cloth.

-Wax: Waxing protects your now clean and polished pat from oxidation and light scratches. The wax will harden, forming a protective barrier. Use a microfiber cloth to apply the wax, and after a light haze to buff it out.

-Detailer: Some detailers are labeled as polish, but since we've talked about polish already, we can call them detailers. After using the clay, polish, and wax, use your detailer every day to wipe off your fingerprints and keep the finish looking glossy. Use your handy microfiber cloth to do this.

AIMM provides a hands-on, immersive music atmosphere that is fast-paced but massively beneficial to intermediate guitarists. From technical courses to music theory, everything taught at the guitar music college is directly applicable to the industry.

“Our main goal is to have AIMM alumni walk from the graduate stage to the main stage,” says Nite Driscoll, president of the Atlanta Institute of Music and Media. “We want to provide the courses, lessons, and tools to help our students elevate their talents and be fully prepared for the music industry.”

In terms of the Music and Technology degree, AIMM is one of the only guitar schools that blend organic instrumentation with music production techniques in a singular program. Any musician has to take care of their instruments. A clean guitar describes you as a person and it can determine the way you play even. Cleaning your guitar is important but we should talk about keeping your guitar from getting so dirty in the first place. Here are the main tips we recommend:

-Make Sure Your Hands Are Clean Before You Play Guitar: Many players wash their hands, but you would be surprised at the number of musicians who pick up their instruments after eating greasy food leaving their guitar covered in fingerprints.

Not sure if your hands are impacting your guitar? Take a look at your strings. Is there a color mismatch where you typically play? Washing your hands will save you time and money in the long run because you won't have to buy new strings as often or spend hours changing them.

-Keep Your Guitar In A Case: If you like to keep your guitar out on display, you probably don't want to hear this. But, it would be best if you keep your guitar in a case. The major downside of leaving your guitar out is that it accumulates a lot of dust. Dust isn't as harmful as sweat, but it can build up in the crevices of your guitar, affecting its electronics (if it has any) and its functionality over time.

When your guitar isn't in its case, it is exposed to everything else around it. So, just put your guitar back in its case when you aren't using it to protect it.

As a guitarist, maintaining your guitar clear i...

As a guitarist, maintaining your guitar clear is really important. We know that guitars get dirty incredibly fast depending a lot on where you play and for how long. Here are some of the most common ways and situations your guitar gets dirty and how it can get damaged by dirt or any other factor:

-If you gig a lot on the weekends, you and your guitar are probably used to sweltering stages and intense stage lights. Playing in that kind of environment is a ton of fun but it likely makes you sweat, and that's your guitar's arch enemy. Other than a quiet amp, but that's a completely different topic!

-Sweat is the kryptonite to your guitar because it not only makes your guitar's finish look bad, it can actually wear away the lacquer and cause irreparable damage to your fretboard over time.

-If you sweat heavy enough, it can also reach and damage the electrical components of your guitar, causing rust and even more technical headaches.

-On the other hand, if you practice for an hour or so a day in an air-conditioned room or studio, keeping your guitar clean won't be much of a chore.

Cleaning your instrument will not only make it last longer and save you money but it will also keep you playing great. Talent is not the only thing that makes you a great guitarist!

As a new musician, keeping in touch with your audience is incredibly important. That’s why creating a Facebook group is a great idea to do so.

When you go to create your first post you might be excited and have a couple done but after some time you could be thinking “what do I post about now?” Essentially, you can post anything at all that is relevant to your music but be sure to stay creative and add variety. To help spark some inspiration, we included a list of post/content ideas below:

Live pictures
Behind the scenes/practice pictures
Upcoming gigs
Music Videos
Livestream Q+A
Simple video updates
News articles/press releases in your genre
Links to your other social platforms (but don’t make it feel spammy)
Polls
Memes
Lyrics
Audio clips
Merch
Gear
Livestreaming on your Facebook group

There are a lot of opportunities to make your Facebook group fun and engaging. Also, remember that your followers will be able to post, too!

Keep in mind, there are two rules of thumb you should follow when you post in your Facebook group: Keep things personal and stay sincere. This will make you feel less like a "Facebook Admin Bot" and more like a real-life artist.

Fan interaction is an integral part of every music career, and Facebook groups are the perfect place to make memorable, productive connections with people.

As a musician, especially if you are new, having a Facebook group is an excellent tool to engage with your growing audience, promote yourself, and participate in conversations in a more personal way. Knowing your audience is growing your audience. Here are some tips to keep your Facebook group running successfully:

-Whenever someone starts a discussion, posts a meme, or asks a question, you should always respond and personalize your connection with people.
-Your group will likely have other aspiring musicians in it, so you can also offer advice for people who want to be musicians, as well.
-Use polls to engage your followers in a Facebook group

a) Poll: When you create posts in your Facebook group, scroll down to the "poll" option. This allows you to ask a question and create multiple answers. Naturally, this will spark interest, drive engagement, and start a discussion.

b) Either-Or: This could be specific to your music as an artist, such as, "which single off of my new album is your favorite?" However, you can also go more general, such as: "Which is better: Fender or Gibson? Which Amphitheatre is the best: Red Rocks or The Gorge? Which was your 90s jam: N'Sync or Backstreet Boys? Have fun with it!

Engaging with your audience is as important as creating good music to become known.

Whether you are an established musician or you ...

Whether you are an established musician or you just started a band last week, chances are you are on Facebook. Everybody these days uses social media, especially Facebook, to stay up to date on the news and keep in contact with family and friends.

Facebook groups are an excellent music marketing tool and a way to promote yourself, connect with your fans, and make new ones. But why are Facebook groups so important? How can they help you grow your audience?

-They allow you to easily connect with your listeners for free. Facebook is one of the most cost-effective ways to grow and expand your audience.
-Groups are all based on interests. While you can directly invite people from your Facebook page or friends list to join your group, it also means that someone who likes your genre of music could stumble in and become a fan for life.
-Groups encourage members to build relationships with each other so they can discuss their favorite songs and share pictures taken at a concert of yours.

The more established of a musician you are, the more engagement you'll immediately receive. If you're a newer artist, it will take a little leg work to get things humming. But, it's certainly worth it.
