Are you a guitarist that wants to learn how to ...

Are you a guitarist that wants to learn how to play the guitar without sacrificing accuracy? If your main goal is to shred at lightning speed when playing an electric guitar, here are some tips you should consider to accomplish your goal:

-Take it Slow: Try focusing on accuracy and precision and let muscle memory do its thing instead of practicing fast and incorrectly.
-Avoid Tension: The brain can sometimes translate the word fast to challenging. What manifests, as a result, is physical tension, which makes playing guitar in general, quite difficult.
-Hand Synchronization: It's critical to have both hands working succinctly so that you hit the string at the exact time for the note to come out as clear as it can.
-Play with a Metronome: Timing is critical. If you become used to playing at one speed and develop that muscle memory, adjusting can be challenging on the fly when performing in a real musical situation with a live band.
-Practice at Different Rhythmic Subdivisions: Practicing with varying rhythmic subdivisions can help add additional skills to your guitar tool kit.

Our guitar instructor, Cameron Allen, shows you how to apply these tips on video completely free as well as more detailed information by clicking the learn more button.

When music producers work, deciding between mix...

When music producers work, deciding between mixing with headphones or studio monitors is vital to the result of the mix or song. If your choice is using monitors as a music producer, here are some pros and cons you should take into consideration:

1-The Pros of Mixing on Monitors
-Ear Health: Although speakers can still cause ear fatigue or hearing loss if used inappropriately, you feel slightly freer when you are working on speakers and not quite so restricted with a cord dangling from your head.
-Closer to the Final Result: Headphones can give you increased frequency response, so starting on a speaker will get you that much closer to your final product and what other listeners will truly experience.

2-The Cons of Mixing on Monitors
-Studio Qualities: An untreated room (acoustically) can give you a completely different response than a treated room. This is also true for how your speakers are placed in the studio and how the room itself is designed.
-The Bottom Line: Overall, it is preferable to mix with studio monitors. You have extra depth and volume that headphones lack, which can really give a track that extra boost it needs.

It is always your choice to use either headphones or studio monitors!

The Best Vocal Processing and Effects Tips and Techniques

The basics of recording an excellent vocal performance are universal.

You need to put together a suitable mic, a clean preamp and audio interface, a recording room that doesn't warp the sound, and you're half way there.

However, there remains plenty of options, both creative and corrective, for maximizing the impact of vocals in your mix.

In this article, we will explore some tips from AIMM's very own Scott Kieklak on vocal processing and effects.

Scott is the Dean of Student Services at AIMM and has been a recording and mixing engineer for over 20 years, so you're in good hands! Check out the videos below, along with the supplemental highlight transcriptions and links.

As a music producer, trying to find the best way to hear what you produce and mix is vital for a good result and proof of your talent. However, not every beginning producer may have access to high-quality monitors. For this reason, your options are: Mix on headphones or not get the project done. Using headphones for your projects has its pros and cons, such as:

1- The pros of mixing on headphones
-Accurate Environment: In some cases, working with headphones may give you a more accurate mixing environment.
-Price Point: Depending on what you buy, most headphones will come at a cheaper cost than speakers.

2- The cons of mixing on headphones
-Consumer Headphones: You’ll want to stay away from these headphones because you will be getting an inaccurate sound when you are mixing and the finished product will end up sounding completely different than what you had imagined.
-Ear Damage: It’s possible to acquire hearing loss when using headphones.
-Sound Perspective: We hear sound from the side of our head when using headphones, instead of in front of us as if we were using speakers. Spacing out your audio is important when mixing and that can be more challenging using headphones.
